Welcome to The Tribe Drive, a Substack newsletter that serves as a Do-it-yourself guide for those who are yearning for more authentic, meaningful lives by finding, or crafting, their own tribes. The Tribe Drive Newsletter leverages the latest science of group dynamics to serve as a kind of social group blueprint.
From diagnostics on your own social health, to boosting cohesion amongst the groups you love and belong to, this newsletter offers a range of resources, including articles, podcasts, and videos, to help our members understand the principles of group dynamics and apply them to their own lives. Tribe building is group dynamics at scale. You may not have the time, energy, or resources to build a tribe or a community, but everyone is empowered with the ability to intentionally cultivate social networks on the individual, family, and camp level within your constellation of existing tribes. This effort, we term #campcrafting.
We also offer practical advice on how to build community, and a space where members can connect with each other and share their own #campcrafting experiences.
Still on the fence? Sounds like a lot of work? It is. But it’s human work. The original work of our Paleolithic ancestors. This work is a Homo sapiens birthright. And for good reason — we wouldn’t have made it if it hadn’t been.
At this point, ask yourself the following questions:
Have you ever felt depressed?
Do you ever feel financially insecure?
Have you ever felt like you were in physical danger?
Have you ever failed at a romantic relationship even though you put your all into it?
Do you ever feel like you have relationships that lack trust?
Have you ever felt like your life lacks meaning and purpose?
If you answered in the affirmative for any of the above, then you certainly have something to gain by exploring and examining the ways in which you can engage in intentional proximity. Can #campcrafting help us live better lives? Let’s find out together.

OUR TRIBAL FUTURE: How to Channel our Foundational Human Instincts Into a Force for Good
About David R. Samson
David’s research directly addresses the central anthropological question of human uniqueness. In other words, the question that drives his work is what is it about our species that has made us the most successful animal on the planet? Specifically, his research probes the interconnection of cognition, sociality, sleep, and group dynamics throughout human evolution. He’s worked with range of primates including lemurs, zoo orangutans, wild chimpanzees, and humans living in different types and scales of societies.
